Abstract

The human microbiome has emerged as a central regulator of health and disease, influencing immune homeostasis, metabolic balance, inflammatory responses, neurological function and cancer processes. The National Conference on Microbiome and Biota: Family—R&D Leading to Clinical & Commercial Implications brought together researchers, clinicians and industry experts to discuss recent advances in microbiome science and its translational potential. The conference highlighted evidence linking gut microbiota dysbiosis with metabolic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, tuberculosis, cancer, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and neurological conditions. Particular emphasis was placed on the gut–brain, gut–liver and microbiota–immune axes, as well as the influence of diet, lifestyle and population-specific factors on microbial composition. Emerging interventions, including probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, biotherapeutics and fecal microbiota transplantation, were discussed as potential approaches for disease prevention and management. The role of advanced multi-omics, deep learning, biomarkers and population-specific microbiome data in developing personalized diagnostics and precision therapies was also emphasized. The discussions underscored the importance of standardized clinical testing, robust human studies, evidence-based regulatory frameworks and stronger academia–industry collaboration to translate microbiome research into safe and effective healthcare solutions. Overall, the conference reinforced the concept of the human microbiome as an important therapeutic and diagnostic frontier with significant implications for future clinical and commercial applications.
